Astoria

To start off, it is exciting to drive over the Astoria-Megler Bridge, especially in the motorhome.  This is the longest continuous truss bridge in North America. It is just over 4 miles long and around 200 feet above the river at the high point.

We had a few things we wanted to do in Astoria. The first was to visit the Columbia River Maritime Museum

Lots of Columbia River information.

This map shows the ship wrecks dating back to the 1800’s

I also took a tour of the Columbia Lightship. I didn’t know there was such a thing, but where building a lighthouse was unfeasible they anchored a ship with a light and fog horn mm. This was the last one used at the mouth of the Columbia River.

In 1979 the Columbia Lightship was replaced by this giant buoy.
This was one of three Cummins engines used as generators.

One of the reasons to come back to Astoria was to get lunch at the Bow Picker. It is a very unique walk up fish and chips place. We grabbed our half orders of fish and chips and enjoyed eating in our car, as it was a little cold outside.

Great place for fish and chips in Astoria.
Our smiles must be hidden?
