The Mighty Mississippi

On the east side of the Mississippi River  is Natchez, Mississippi and the west side is Vidalia Louisiana. After checking in at the Visitors Center in Natchez we decided to take a “Open Air Tour” of the Historical parts of the city. This city dates back to the Natchez Indians, the French, the British and was saved from destruction by their brave Mayor during the Civil War. Many of the beautiful Mansions date back to the early 1800’s. It was a really nice tour with lot of historical stories to go with it. The tour was in a battery powered 6 passenger GEM Car.  It would have been fun to tour some of the Mansions but we didn’t have time in our schedule. If in town we would recommend “Open Air Tours.” The weather was really nice.  Link to our Album.

We stayed at the River View RV Park and Resort that is across the river in Vidalia  Louisiana. Our site was a very short walk to the edge of the Mighty Mississippi.  To me there is a fascination with watching the big Tug Boats push all those barges up and down the river. I feel the same way when we park along the Columbia River in Oregon. I would hear the quiet rumble of a Tug Boat and see the bridge over the bank and have to go see what it is pushing. One tug was pushing 35 barges up stream, another pushing 10 barges of Army Vehicles, and one a bunch of barges of coal. It is hard to Imagine the power those tug boats have. I wonder where they came from and where they are going. How do they load or unload them. I could have sat on the bank watching for hours but it was time to go.  We also added Mississippi and Louisiana to our map. Only Texas to go, and that should happen Saturday. Here is a link to our Mississippi River Album.
