Confederate States

We are in Lynchburg, Virginia and will be spending a few days here. We are staying in the Heritage Baptist Church parking lot. This church is very Mission minded and was Bruce and Katie’s sending church when they went to China. They are reconnecting with friends here.

We took a day trip to the Appomattox Court House National Historical Park yesterday. Side note, “Appomattox Court House” is the name of a village, not a Virginia Court House. This is a very important place in the history of the United States, as it is where on April 9, 1865, General Lee surrendered to Ulysses  S. Grant  ending the Civil War. We went into the McLean House where the surrender papers were drawn up and signed.

The heart of the terms was that Confederates would be paroled after surrendering their weapons and other military property. If surrendered soldiers did not take up arms again, the United States government would not prosecute them. Grant also allowed Confederate officers to keep their mounts and side arms.

It was only 5 days later, April 14, 1865 that Abraham Lincoln was assassinated.

As we were in the McLean House where the surrender meeting took place we saw this map on the wall. The first picture which showed the Confederate States, and realized that those are the states that are missing on our map. So here we go working on putting the Confederate States on our map.
