Downeast

Down East“, also “Downeast“, is a term for parts of eastern coastal New England and Canada, particularly the U.S. state of Maine and Canada’s Maritime Provinces, an area that closely corresponds to the historical French territory of Acadia. The phrase apparently derives from sailing terminology: sailors from western ports sailed downwind toward the east to reach the area.

We enjoy taking the roads less traveled. We left Living Waters Bible camp and turned left on US Highway 1. It is a nice two lane road that wonders through small towns, between trees and lakes. Quite often we could see Canada off to the east, sometimes just a few miles away . I thought we would be driving along the coast, like on the west, but we never got close enough to the Atlantic to see it till we went to Acadia National Park.  It was a very nice comfortable drive. We stayed on it all the way to Ellsworth, Maine. We are at Timberland Acers RV Resort which is just out of Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. We went to the Acadia National Park Visitors Center and stamped our National Parks Passport Books, hopped on the Island Explore bus and took the Harbor Loop ride. It was wet and foggy, but still an enjoyable ride. Took another Island Explore bus to Bar Harbor, checked out the town.  In the evening we went to “The Great Maine Lumberjack Show” It was a lot of fun, and we learned about the logging history of Maine.   Check out our pictures.

  1. Wow! This is where David and I had planned to go several years ago–and then he went and broke his leg volunteering. Even in the fog and overcast skies it looks so incredible! The lumberjack show looks interesting. Looking forward to seeing more pictures as you make your way to new destinations!
