A couple weeks ago, I received a text from Greg (Josh’s father-in-law) which asked if I would like to go Sturgeon Fishing, he said that Josh was invited also. We would be joining a small group of Greg’s friends. It has been over 30 years since I touched a fishing pole. We decided to to give it a try, then as days went by we wondered what in the world we got ourselves into?? Especially when we looked at the information and saw that we had to get at least knee deep in the pond to unhook the sturgeon.
When we arrived at Poor Fish Ranch, which is hidden in the middle of rolling hills, we still had no idea what we had gotten ourselves into. We met the rest of the guys, they brought out our fishing poles and explained how things worked. Once we placed the Pickled Herring on the barbless hook and cast it into the pond, the fish started biting. We all had a great time. When one of the group would catch a Sturgeon, those around would help. When you had one on the hook the sturgeon would give you quite the fight, then once it was close to the shore, someone would get into the pond and try to grab the tail of the sturgeon (sometime that was quite a task) then with the other hand grab it around the mouth, turn it on its back and take out the hook. Then it was picture time before you let it swim back into the pond. You can see the smiles while holding the Sturgeon.
That is a very long explanation, when maybe I should just say, it was lots of fun?? But one more story. I managed to stay out of the water (Josh usually unhooked the ones I caught) until I hooked a big one, it took a long time to get it to the shore. I handed off my pole, waded into the pond, grab it by the tail (this took a while) and then mouth, the hook was released. Then I rolled it over for the picture of me and my big Sturgeon.
