After almost three months we rolled the rearend back under the Forty. I must say, it feels good to have it back where it belongs. What a big learning curve. It tested me almost every step of the way. In my last post on the Forty I had the rear end together, well as I thought about it I wasn’t happy with the setup so I took it apart, waited for a new gasket set, and played with it somemore. To change the pinion lash you change the axle housing gaskets (which come in different thickness) which are color coded. After many many many trys I had it withing the tolerance and everything felt good. Then took the housings off again, added gasket sealer and reassembled, and that part was finished!
Assembling the ring and pinion was a big brain twister, and a lot of work. But that was just a part of the rear end project. There were many other parts to clean, paint, replace and figure out how to put them back together. After getting it together, it felt good to roll the completed rear end back under the Forty.
I want to thank David for his help. He has been my consulant and helper when I had something that I couldn’t do myself. Like rolling the rear end under the car. David has his own project going, so I get to give him a hand when he needs it.
