We left our friends in Wisconsin and took the 250 mile trip through Wisconsin, Michigan, back into Wisconsin before we dropped into Minnesota and the Lakehead Basin Marina and RV Park. This RV Park is where the yachts are stored in the winter. Once the lake thaws the yachts go back in the water and it becomes a RV Park for the summer.
The Lake Superior Maritime Museum is located just over the iconic “Lift Bridge” from the RV Park. The Maritime Museum is the most visited tourist attraction in Minnesota. We toured the museum then took a ride up the North Coast to see the Split Rock Lighthouse. This is the most photographed lighthouse in the United States. I had no idea we would be going to these famous places in Minnesota.
On our second day we went to the Lake Superior Railroad Museum. This was amazing! They have the biggest steam engine that I have seen, The Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range #227. It is 128 feet long and burned 350 pounds of coal per minute. It was a 2-8-8-4 Yellowstone. This was just one of the massive collection. Here is a link the the Lake Superior Railroad Museum album. For a Train Guy this museum would be worth a special trip.
It was a beautiful day, so we took a drive on the Skyline Parkway. We had great views of Duluth and I took a walk up the Enger Tower, where I could look out on not only Duluth, Minnesota but Superior, Wisconsin and Lake Superior. You can check out our Duluth photo album here.
