Mission Statement
Because people with intellectual and developmental disabilities have unrealized God-given potential, Shepherds College provides a uniquely designed learning environment for our students to discover and maximize that potential, so they each are empowered to lead a fulfilling life.
History
It was 1957 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin when parents of a son with intellectual disabilities, Lornie and Arlene Cayton, approached their Sunday school class and asked a probing question. “Could our class actually do something to help children with intellectual disabilities?” Answering that question would lead to the establishment of a ministry that would go on to have a profound impact on the lives of people with intellectual disabilities.
In 1964, Shepherds Home and School opened its doors, welcoming 36 children. At that time, little was being done in public education to address the needs of this special population. Shepherds Home and School provided an essential service to these children and their families. Shepherds expanded its services over the years to accommodate the needs of adults with intellectual disabilities.
In 2008, Shepherds Ministries returned to its educational roots with the establishment of Shepherds College, a three-year post-secondary educational program for students with intellectual disabilities.
In 2023 Shepherds College added two full hookup sites, Just for SOWERS. In September Linda and Warren Vogel were the first SOWERs to serve there. It was a great experience and all their work was very appreciated. If you are looking at your 2024 schedule consider Shepherds College. I know you will be a Blessing as you are Blessed volunteering there.
If their mission isn’t enough to put Shepherds College on your short list, did you know that there is a Dairy Queen right across the street. Lots to see close by in Milwaukee, including the Harley Davidson Museum, just over a half hour away. About a half hour the other direction you can ride a mail boat, the Lake Geneva US Mail boat. Check out this video on the mail boat.
This is the SOWER Project that we are signed up for in May. We would love to have another SOWER Couple join us.
