On to Oklahoma

The SOWERs 40th Anniversary Rally ended on Tuesday morning and we headed towards Anadarko, Oklahoma , where our next project is.  This was a little over 300 miles, but we decided to enjoy the journey.

We spent two nights at the Burns Run East Army Corp Campground. This is on Lake Texoma just across the boarder into Oklahoma. It is a really nice campground and since we have the Senior America the Beautiful pass it only coat $28.00  for two nights. Did I mention that we had full hookups with a covered picnic table.

As you know we enjoy stopping at Harvest Hosts. Thursday we headed to The Chisholm Trail Heritage Center in Duncan, Oklahoma. We spent the night in their big parking lot and enjoyed touring the Heritage Center. I didn’t know anything about the Chisholm Trail, but we learned a lot going through the really nice Heritage Center.

The Chisholm Trail was a trail used in the post-Civil War era to drive cattle overland from ranches in Texas to Kansas railheads. The trail was established by Black Beaver, a Lenape guide and rancher, and his friend Jesse Chisholm, a Cherokee merchant.

They could buy cattle cheap in Texas and sell them at a profit in Kanas, if they could get them there.

We also learned about the The True Adventures of the Abernathy Boys. This is a fascinating story of two very young boys traveling across America. I was told, at the Heritage Center, that this book about their adventures is a good read for all ages. It is called  Bud and Me

We got up in the morning and headed to our April project, Sermon on the Mount in Anadarko, Oklahoma. I will have more information on this after we get started. Here is a link to our Oklahoma album.
