It is cold out there, way colder then I ever experienced growing up in Central California. If it got down into the 20’s it was really cold. I think we had a little dusting of snow 3 times in 65 years. Well here in Kuna, ID we started the day out at around 5 degrees and it never made it to 20 degrees, and this seems typical. It snowed on December 9th and hasn’t melted. We will have a White Christmas, just not sure if we will have a fresh coat of snow covering the old snow. I know that this is nothing like the -40 degrees with 70 mile per hour winds, many places in our country are having now. I don’t know how people live in those conditions. But living in Idaho is sure different then where I grew up.
I was asked how we get along in the snow /cold. It has been fine for us. It is beautiful! As we drive around Ann keeps saying in amazement, “I can’t believe we live where it snows.” The roads have been cleared right after the snow, so we have had no problem driving. I have learned that you have to watch for those shinny spots on the sidewalk. Ice is not your friend! How would I know that?? I also found that in our neighborhood, you are responsible to shovel the snow off the sidewalk in front of your house. So when I shovel my driveway, I do the sidewalk too. It isn’t too bad to clear if you only get a couple inches. We have been up here in the cold country while living in our motorhome and we did fine, but I was always worried about our hydronic heater, praying it would keep working. If your wet bay freezes your water quits working and if it gets too cold it could break things. I am thankful that I winterized our motorhome and don’t have to worry about keeping it warm while it sits beside the house. In our house we just set the thermostat and it keeps us warm. We did purchase a electric fireplace / TV stand. We don’t really use the heater on it but seeing the fireplace run makes us feel cozy. If I had to work outside I might feel differently about the cold and snow, but being retired we choose when to go out. I did work a bit in the garage today and it was somewhere in the 30s inside the garage. I just didn’t stay out there too long.
So at this point, we are doing fine in the cold. I have enough projects to keep busy inside and will wait for outside projects till it warms up a little. What ever the weather is where you are, be careful and we hope you will be able to get to you Christmas Celebrations. * Cold Album
